Leading-edge technology to treat mental illness is now available at the Brampton Civic Hospital which is part of the William Osler Health Centre.
The rTMS is an innovative treatment available for people with major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) where medication may not be effective or an option.
During an rTMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the patient’s scalp near the forehead. The electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the region of the brain involved in mood control and depression.
The William Osler Health Centre hospital system has one of the largest mental health and addictions community hospital programs in Ontario. The hospital system receives 1,400 outpatient referrals in psychiatry each month, with more than 70 per cent of these referrals for mental health and addictions.
In 2018-19 more than 299,687 patients visited Osler’s emergency departments at BCH and Etobicoke Hospital as well as Peel Memorial’s Urgent Care Centre (UCC). -CINEWS
