“Witchdoctor” charts new territory for Lily Frost and Her Kelvinators who usually step it up with a vintage-vibe swing, delivered with a French cabaret attitude. The new song rides a distorted, twangy, surf-noir guitar and a hip hop beat, to a climactic little big band voodoo horn break. It also features vibraphone and saw, each enhancing the other-worldly feel. Frost’s haunted and haunting voice tells the tale of a brief but deep, fleeting encounter so powerful and memorable that it actually cures your blues and changes your life.
Lily Frost is celebrated for her earlier recordings, such as 2008’s Lily Swings, which featured swing renditions of Billie Holiday songs, or for all of her 12 original albums to date. Well known from song placements in TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Charmed, Mistresses, Crazy Beautiful and Being Erica, or TV commercials for Chevy Cobalt and The Bay, Frost has earned a place in Canada’s music scene elite.
Music critic Carla Gillis of NOW Magazine has written: “…the criminally underrated singer/songwriter is conveying some seriously positive vibes right now… smart indie pop featuring her clear and glorious voice, honest and direct lyrics, and spellbinding songwriting that often takes surprising twists. (She’s a master chorus-writer.)” – CINEWS
