Major OPP traffic safety campaign kicks off for long weekend

This long Civic Holiday weekend bang in the middle of summer is when the OPP is timing its blitz to target drivers who don’t slow down, move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks.

Drivers who fail to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks parked at the side of the road will be in for a rude shock.

This much-required blitz comes after incidents in 2017 where drivers slammed into the back of OPP cruisers. Also since 1989, five officers died in similar circumstances.

Approximately 1,000 charges have been laid so far in 2018. Last year, OPP said more than 2,100 charges were laid.

If convicted, drivers will have to pay a fine of $490.

So drivers need to unlearn some of their bad driving habits, the OPP will be out in force looking for bad drivers. -CINEWS
