Inputs received from the US Drug Enforcement Agency and affidavits by several people arrested in the ongoing investigation has revealed that the actress was an active participant in the drug racket, with strong links to drug baron, 55-year-old Vicky Goswami,  Thane Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said on Saturday.

Mama Kulkarni lives in  Kenya and the Indian police would be seeking her extradition, along  with Vicky Goswami, to face charges, he said.  They are both in a relationship, the officer said.

The first step towards the extradition process would be the  issuance of Red Corner Notice against them through Interpol.

There are 17 accused in the case, of whom seven are absconding. The other 10 are in judicial custody, after the case was cracked open two months ago, when police seized  18.5 tonne of ephedrine, worth approximately Rs. 2,000 crore. The raid was conducted at the offices of Avon Life Sciences Ltd. in Solapur district of Maharashtra.

The police chief said they had information that Mamtat Kulkarni attended a meeting of the drug syndicate member in the port city of Mombasa in Kenya in January this year to finalize details of the transport and manufacture of the ephedrine. The plan was to manufacture meethamphetamin and smuggle it into the international markets. It is estimated that 1 kg of meth costs around US$50,000.

The actress and Goswami also attended another meeting in Dubai in April this year, along with some gang members from Morocco, Mr. Singh said.
Mamta Kulkarni was part of several commercial Bollywood successes such as Aashiq Awara (1993), Waqt Hamara Hai (1993), Krantiveer (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Baazi (1996), China Gate (1998), Beqabu (1995), and Chhupa Rustam: A Musical Thriller (2001) among others. Her performance in ‘Aashiq Awara’ (1993) won her the 1994 Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of the Year. The film, which launched Saif Ali Khan, was a superhit. In the blockbuster ‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), directed by Rakesh Roshan, Mamta Kulkarni starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. She quit Bollywood after her appearance in the film Kabhie Tum Kabhie Hum.

Her career went downhill in 2002, disappeared from Bollywood and some years later was found living in Kenya. – CINEWS
