Dhaka, Jan 6 (ANI): Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami party has called for a countrywide strike tomorrow after the Supreme Court upheld death penalty for its chief Motiur Rahman Nizami for arms trafficking and 1971 war crimes against humanity.

According to The Daily Star, it is the first strike called by the party after it lost registration amid calls for a ban.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division upheld his death in three charges, life imprisonment in two and acquitted him in three other charges.

Nizami was the last high-profile suspect to be tried for 1971 war crimes. The court delayed his verdict in June 2014 because of his poor health.

The special tribunal had last year said that death would be the only fitting punishment for the horrendous crimes which Nizami committed. (ANI)
