Hyderabad, Jan. 19 (ANI): A Human Resource Development Ministry team on Tuesday visited Hyderabad Central University (HCU) to take stock of situation emerged following 28-year-old Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide.
They interacted with the students protesting at the site of suicide, who told them that with no power vested into the committee, they did not accept such a farcical committee.
Shakila Shamsu, an Officer on Special Duty in the ministry, who led the team, said, “I am not talking to the media right now, as we have come here to meet students because they have something to share with us. Our role has been to hear out everyone.”
The body of Rohith was found hanging at a hostel room on the campus on Sunday evening, and was sent for a post-mortem.
Rohith was among the five research scholars, who were suspended by the HCU authorities in August last and also one of the accused in the case of assault on a student leader. However, the suspension was revoked later.
The five research scholars were suspended from the hostel for rest of their study period for allegedly attacking an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader. (ANI)
