Everyone knows that real estate in Mississauga is on the higher side, but few would pinpoint just the area within the city that has been singled out as being a little over the top as far as real estate prices go. The federal riding of Mississauga Centre ranks as one the worst areas to find affordable rental housing, according to data from the Canadian Rental Housing Index, a national partnership of housing associations, credit unions and municipal associations. So, in a way this report is not really news because it is simply telling us something we already know.
In a report released September 17, out of the top 20 federal ridings with the worst affordability challenges, the index finds 11 of them are in Ontario while six are in British Columbia. Mississauga Centre ranks 12th out of the 20 ridings.
One wonders if the LRT running along Hurontario will actually help make the area more affordable. Although there is plenty of talk about ensuring builders prioritize affordable housing, it is unlikely to happen. Already the area is filling up with pricey condo projects and the LRT will only end up fuelling demand for more of the same. -CINEWS
