Modi back in Delhi after three-nation visit

New Delhi, Dec 25 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on Friday evening after a three-nation tour that included a surprise visit to Pakistan.

“Breakfast in Kabul, tea in Lahore & dinner in Delhi! PM @narendramodi returns after a unique day in Indian diplomacy,” external affairs ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted.

On his way back to New Delhi from Kabul, Modi made a sudden stopover in Lahore where he met his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and pledged to pursue the peace process.

Modi spent some 90 minutes at the ancestral residence of Sharif at Raiwind, about 40 km from Lahore.

Modi greeted Sharif on his birthday, attended the wedding celebrations of the Pakistani leader’s granddaughter and also held talks on bilateral issues, officials and media reports said.

Modi left for Russia on Wednesday on a two-day visit for the annual bilateral summit during which the two countries signed 16 agreements including those related to defence and nuclear production.

He arrived in Kabul early Friday morning and inaugurated Afghanistan’s new parliament building that was constructed with Indian assistance.

He also addressed the parliament.
