Muslims in GTA feel a little uneasy

MISSISSAUGA, November 20 (CINEWS): After 9/11, Muslims in GTA like their counterparts across the western world felt vulnerable and uneasy. It is the same thing after every major atrocity perpetrated by terrorists invoking Islam as their inspiration. The terrorist attacks in Paris last week has once again exposed Muslims to scrutiny.muslim
One Mississauga-based hijabi woman said that given the large Muslim population, she doesn’t feel vulnerable or stared at following the Paris attacks. “But when 9/11 happened, we lived in a small town where we felt very uncomfortable whenever we went out for weeks after that,” she said. However, no one said anything racist or Islamophobic, however, it was their silence and looks that said it all.
Islamophobia tends to rise following some atrocities and this time it is no different. Two places of worship have been vandalized and in Toronto a defenceless Muslim woman was physically attacked by two men while on her way to pick up her son from a public school in the Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East, area around 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
Toronto Police said the attackers allegedly called her a terrorist and told her to ‘go back to her country.’
The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Police are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.
