Srinagar, Jan. 4 (ANI): A four-day National Ice Skating Championship, organised by the Ice Skating Association of India, in collaboration with state’s tourism department, began yesterday and will go on till January 06.
“I have come here for the first time to have a great experience in ice skating. I got a chance to compete different people. I am feeling good here because of the snowfall and the ice. It is also a good place for tourists,” said a participant, Priya.
The ice skating championship attracted tourists and encouraged winter sports.
The first day of the championship saw a huge number of participants. More numbers of enthusiasts are expected to participate in the coming days.
“Prior to the championship, our kids had never done ice-skating but they learnt from the coaching camps along with kids from other states. With regular practice, we have prepared our children to participate with confidence,” said one of the organiser, Hafiza Hassan.
Gulmarg is a popular tourist destination offering adventure sports like like skiing, ice skating and paragliding.
Kashmir was once dubbed the Switzerland of the east. It was once a Mecca for climbers, skiers, honeymooners and filmmakers drawn to the state’s soaring peaks, fruit orchards and timber houseboats bobbing on Dal Lake in Srinagar.
Snowfall is a boon for northern states in high altitudes as the tourist inflow increases during this period boosting the tourism industry. (ANI)
