New TTC transit pass for low-income riders

A discount program to help more people ride the TTC will be a great poverty fighting weapon.

The Fair Fare Pass will make it affordable for some of the most vulnerable residents of Toronto to get around this city.

The pass will give $1 off single fares and $30.75 off monthly passes to people through the Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support program.

The discount is programmed onto a PRESTO card. Cardholders must load funds onto the card to access the discounted adult fare or monthly pass.

A single pass will allow riders to get to work and it will also help the TTC in increasing ridership which has become a cause for concern in recent years.

Up to 36,000 people are expected to get with this program which is the first phase of the Fair Fare Pass. The other two phases will be implemented by 2021.

Now if GO Transit were to also consider a low fare option for working people earning under a certain amount, it would enable many more people to consider taking up jobs in a more distant area rather than not consider it because it would prove to be too expensive to get there. – CINEWS
