Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Dec. 12 (ANI): Nine Maoist rebels surrendered before the police in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.
All the nine rebels were actively operating in coffee plantation areas of Visakhapatnam.
In one of the incidents, the nine Maoist rebels badly beat up a coffee department ranger.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Rural Visakhapatnam, Koya Praveen Kumar, said the police learnt about the activities of these rebels through the confessions of an ultra arrested recently.
“We could reach out to them through our sources and well wishers and somehow they were convinced to come forward and surrender before us,” said Kumar.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has initiated many schemes for Maoist rebels who surrender with their own consent in order to give them a better life.
The government, besides granting lump sum amount, also rehabilitates the rebels.
The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of peasants and landless labourers. They routinely call strikes, attack government property and target politicians and police, mostly across swathes of rural India’s east and south. (ANI)
