No mention of poor in PM’s ‘philosophical’ speech: Congress

New Delhi, Nov. 27 (ANI): The Congress Party on Friday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi made no mention of any programmes for the poor in his ‘philosophical’ speech in the Lok Sabha on the 125th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Dr. B R Ambedkar.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge said that they were expecting the Prime Minster to announce social and economic schemes to benefit the people.

“He spoke very philosophically today. He did not speak about any programmes for the poor of the country. We were expecting that during the debate on the Constitution he would announce social and economic plans. But, just philosophy won’t suffice, he did not say anything about using the Constitution for the benefit of the people,” Kharge told ANI.

Congress leader and former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on his part said that the Prime Minister’s speech was fine but he should have assured people that his government would curb the growing intolerance in the country.

“The reality is that there is a lot of difference between what they say and what they do. In the last 18 months we have seen that common man does not feel safe. If artists are returning their awards then it is a cause for concern. They are insulting people. They should assure people that such incidents do not happen again,” he said.

Meanwhile, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “Despite making such speeches, there has been no change in the behaviour. If it happens this time then it is good.”

Earlier, Prime Minsiter Modi had said in Lok Sabha that government’s only religion is ‘India first’ and the only holy book the government follows is the Constitution of India.

Lauding Dr. B R Ambedkar for drafting the Indian Constitution, he said that one could not praise enough the creators of the Constitution.

Prime Minister Modi also reminded the house the importance of the Constitution and its purpose of maintaining the democratic setup of the country. (ANI)
