Majuli, April. 4 (ANI): Sarbananda Sonowal, the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Assam, on Monday pitched for the development and growth of Majuli Island, often referred to as Assam’s spiritual nerve centre because of its numerous satras or Vaishnav monasteries.
“Majuli is a unique place in Assam, but the people here face a lot of problems like the lack of communication and infrastructure and are deprived of modern day growth. So, in the near future, we have to take all possible measures to make Majuli grow, develop, and also make it visible on the map of the world,” Sonowal told the reporters here.
The Majuli Assembly constituency is a 540 square kilometres island in the River Brahmaputra. The constituency has an electorate of 1.14 lakh, of whom 43,000 belong to the Mishing Tribe.
Majuli was never a VIP constituency until now. It is now in focus because of Sonowal.
Apart from the lack of infrastructure, the main issue in Majuli is the lack of communication. It takes more than an hour for a ferry to reach the island from Neamati Ghat, which is located on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra. (ANI)
