A 17-year-old boy is dead and another is in hospital after a car crashed into a tree in Brampton overnight.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at McVean Drive and Da Vinci Avenue, in the Goreway Drive and Castlemore Road area, around 11:15 p.m. Monday.
Paramedics said the boy, who was a passenger sitting in the backseat of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, who is also 17, was rushed to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition. His condition has since been upgraded to serious. Police originally said the driver had been placed in custody for impaired but now say there was no impairment involved. He’s expected to be charged with criminal negligence causing death.
A dog, belonging to the driver, was seated in the front passenger seat and also died in the crash.
Police said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
McVean was closed in both directions for the investigation but has since reopened.
A vigil was held Tuesday night for Jai Sidhu which was attended by his many friends and bereaved family.
