One of a gang arrested for helping an undertrial escape

New Delhi, Aug 2 (IANS) The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested Deepak aka ‘Boxer’ who helped an undertrial escape from police custody while he was being taken by a bus to court on July 30.

“Deepak was arrested from Ghumar area of Sonepat deistrict in Haryana today,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Bhisam Singh told IANS.

“We have found a driving licence of the victim, whose car was snatched by the gang on the intervening night of July 29-30,” the officer said.

Deepak is one of the 10 members of a gang who had helped another member, Jitender aka ‘Gogi’, to escape from police custody while he was being taken by bus from Rohini jail to a court in Sonepat on July 30.

The gang threw chilli powder into the eyes of the policemen escorting Jitender and also robbed the policemen of their sophisticated MP5 sub-machine gun and 20 live cartridges.

“Deepak arranged the car for the gang. And he along with two more gang members took the bus on which Jitender was being taken to Sonepat. They stopped the bus at a pre-decided place and took Jitender away,” the officer added.

Explaining the roles of all the three members who took the bus, the officer said, “One was tasked with throwing chilli powder into the eyes of the policemen, another was asked to open fire, and the third was to snatch the weapons.”

“We are looking for other gang members,” the officer added.
