Bypassing the traditional news outlets and going directly to the people is becoming a communication method of choice for more politicians. This week the Ontario PC party put out its content on its new social media account on Twitter account @ontarionewsnow. It consists of a minute-long video, titled “Premier Ford takes a look back at his first month in office,” it includes all his official visits and meetings.
Lyndsey Vanstone, a former broadcaster and Ford campaign staffer, is the on-air presenter in the video. In a voice-over, Vanstone said, “Premier Ford attended dozens of events in 30 days and he managed to keep a few campaign promises, too.” An interview with Ford is featured in the 60-second video on the account and it touches upon important campaign promises notably the ending of the cap and trade and carbon tax.
The launch of the social media account is troubling for many journalists because they’ve been concerned about being kept at arm’s distance by the Doug Ford’s PC government and this new communication channel seems to be intended to continue the trend. -CINEWS
