Sydney, Jan. 23 (ANI): Manish Pandey scored his maiden ODI hundred to propel India to a six-wicket win over Australia in the fifth and final match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Chasing an imposing target of 331, India completed the record chase in Australia with two balls remaining, thanks to Pandey’s unbeaten 104-run knock.
Earlier, opener Shikhar Dhawan (78 off 56 balls) provided the initial thrust with Rohit Sharma as the duo made a strong 123-run partnership for the opening wicket.
However, the dismissal of Dhawan and star batsman Virat Kohli (8) in quick succession briefly threatened the chase before Sharma and Pandey consolidated the innings by engineering a 97-run stand for the third wicket.
Sharma, who was adjudged as the Man of the Series, fell one run short of completing his third century of the series.
Subsequently, Dhoni (34) and Pandey added 94 runs for the fourth wicket to help the visitors inch closer towards a consolation win. Pandey, who was named as the Man of the Match, scored the winning runs with Gurkeerat Singh on the other end.
Earlier, David Warner (122) and Mitchell Marsh (102 not out) helped Australia, which finished the series 4-1, score 330-7.
For India, debutant bowler Jasprit Bumrah made impressive start to his bowling career by returning figures of 2-40.
India will now turn their focus towards T20 format as they will take on Australia in the three-match series, which starts on Tuesday. (ANI)
