Peel school board seek staff demographic information

Brampton, July 31 (CINEWS) For the first time, the Peel public school board will request its 16,000 employees to take part in a voluntary census designed to capture a true demographic picture of the organization’s workforce.Multiculturalism
This survey will go out in November which could, if the teachers’ strike materializes could be the unofficial start of the new school year.
The idea behind devising this survey is to assist the Peel District School Board in carrying out its employment equity strategy, which includes objectives to attract, retain, develop and promote men and women who reflect the diverse community served by the board.
Participation will be voluntary, anonymous, confidential and in keeping with privacy legislation as well as the board’s commitment to the Ontario Human Rights Code, according to board administration.
About two-dozen questions ¬– including requests to identify gender, sexual orientation, religion and if a respondent is a member of a particular racialized community – are part of the survey expected to take 10-15 minutes to complete.
Access to the document will be open for two weeks in November and results will be available in spring 2016.
This attempt to get a demographic picture of the board’s employee population is part of ongoing efforts to create a fairer and unbiased hiring and promotion process.
The board said the data collected would be used to help identify strengths and barriers to equity and inclusion, and used to develop and target workplace equity supports.
One wonders if things will ever change. Does the board really require its employees to go fill out a survey to figure out that there is one race in particular that is over-represented while there are a bunch of other ethnic and visible minorities who aren’t well represented at all. Just one look at the names of the employees should help the experts clue in quickly.
A plan, entitled The Journey Ahead: Our Action Plan for Equitable Hiring and Promotion in Peel, was developed to establish a bias-free hiring and promotion process. Part of that action plan includes carrying out the workplace census.
