In the next few weeks, many municipal, provincial and federal politicians across the country will send out flyers and emails to their constituents inviting them for a BBQ. Free BBQ. These community BBQs gives voters and their families to get to meet their representatives, break bread with them and perhaps even air some of their pet peeves or grievances.
On Sunday, July 26th, Brampton West MPP Vic Dhillon will hold his Annual Community BBQ between 1 pm and 4 pm at Garden Square, outside Rose Theatre. As usual hundreds of his constituents are expected to attend. There is lively music, a play area for children and adults get to chat, meet new friends and maybe even make friends with Mr Dhillon.
Every year Mississauga East-Cooksville MPP Dipka Damerla holds a ‘Fall Fling’ community barbecue constituents which includes a live entertainment program featuring local Mississauga talent. Over a dozen local community groups attend and run community booths to provide information on their services available.
In Mississauga, some politicians are mindful of having their BBQs during Ramadan as many of the Muslim residents would either have to give it a miss or come there and eat nothing.
Because of so many complaints, politicians in some ridings and wards now have their BBQs after Ramadan. According to a source it made no difference whether it was Ramadan because a large number of Muslim residents attended but didn’t eat anything. However a few of them could be seen packing some of the chicken hotdogs and burgers to be consumed later.
So when you get your invitation to attend the BBQ thrown by your local councillor, MP or MPP, why not choose to go. It will give you the opportunity to meet with other residents, potential rivals of the elected representative as well as getting to know the person who makes decisions about things that affect you on your behalf.
