Brampton, April 8 (CINEWS): Over the years scores of politicians from Punjab have paid visits to Sikh strongholds in Canada. Some visits have been for fund-raising, others to campaign and seek alliances.
Now Captain Amarinder Singh, former Punjab chief minister, who is leader of the oppositionCongress Party will visit Canada and the U.S. from April 19 to May 7. Apparently the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been making its
presence felt on the community in recent months and this visit is expected to counter that party’s growing influence.
Currently Punjab is headed by the Shirimoni Akali Dal (SAD) government lead by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, elections to the state assembly will be held in 2017. The AAP is posing a challenge to both the SAD and the Congress parties. The Bharitiya Janata Party (BJP) has an alliance with the Akali Dal.
The Tribune newspaper reported on Saturday that Badal will be accompanied, among others, by famous singer Hans Raj Hans. He will start his North America tour from Chicago and then travel to Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Amarinder Singh told the newspaper that he will stay in each city for two days, holding a rally on the first day and smaller gatherings the following day.
His wife, Congress MLA Preneet Kaur, will be returning to India from her Australia-New Zealand tour on April 6 and then proceeding on a tour of Italy, Germany and the UK.
