Pyongyang’s n-test adversely impacts peace, says India

New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS) India on Friday condemned the nuclear test carried out by North Korea and urged Pyongyang to refrain from actions which “adversely impact peace and stability in the region”.

“India deplores the nuclear test conducted by North Korea,” an External Affairs Ministry statement said.

“It is a matter of grave concern Pyongyang has again acted in violation of its international obligations and in contravention of the objective of the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula that North Korea itself has endorsed,” it added.

“India remains concerned about the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies which has adversely impacted India’s national security,” the MEA said.

North Korea has said it “successfully” conducted a nuclear test, its fifth and the “most powerful” test so far.

The North Korean Central TV Broadcasting Station said the country carried out a nuclear explosion test to check the capacity of a nuclear warhead and it will “continue to strengthen our capacity to bolster our nuclear force”.

An artificial quake of magnitude 5.3 was detected around 9.30 a.m. at North Korea’s main Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

According to estimates, the yield of this test is about 10 kilotons, which is believed to be Pyongyang’s most powerful nuclear detonation to date.
