LAO’s (Legal Aid Ontario) Racialized Communities Strategy began in 2016 with the aim to improve and expand legal aid services for racialized communities. Between now and December, LAO representatives will be talking to community groups throughout the province to identify what measures will improve racialized communities’ access to justice.
The strategy is working on several areas that legal aid could play a role in improving the legal needs and rights of racialized communities in Ontario, including:
• The overrepresentation of racialized communities in Ontario’s justice system
• Racial disparities in Ontario’s child protection system
• Problems within the bail system
• The need for legal materials to be translated and available in a wider range of languages – CINEWS
