Rajnath thanks Bangladesh on ULFA leader’s repatriation

New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS) Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday thanked Bangladesh for handing over banned militant outfit ULFA’s general secretary Anup Chetia to India, saying “it shows its commitment and maturity to cooperate with India on terror and organised crime”.

“I thank the Bangladesh government for its active cooperation in sending Anoop Chetia to India,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I welcome the handing over of Anoop Chetia to India by the Bangladesh government,” he said in another tweet.

Chetia, a founder member of ULFA, was arrested by the Bangladesh forces in 1997 under the Foreigners and Passport Act and faces several other charges, including possession of arms and currencies of 16 countries. In Assam, the militant faces charges of extortion and murders.

He is to be brought to India on Wednesday.

“Chetia deportation process has been completed and he will be brought to New Delhi today (Wednesday),” a home ministry source said.
