Rajya Sabha takes up juvenile justice bill for discussion

New Delhi, Dec 22 (IANS) The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday began discussion on the Juvenile Justice amendment bill following demands from members.

The bill was listed for discussion and passing in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, amid protests over the release of the December 16 gang-rape juvenile convict.

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014, provides for the trial of those between 16-18 years as adults for heinous offences.

Also, anyone between 16-18 years who commits a less serious offence may be tried as an adult if he is apprehended after he attains the age of 21.
