Buenos Aires, May 5 (IANS) Defending champions River Plate were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle.

Lucas Alario scored in the second-half to hand River Plate a 1-0 victory here on Wednesday in their round of 16 second-leg clash. But the result at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires was not enough for the Argentine outfit after their 0-2 loss in Quito last week, reports Xinhua.

Meanwhile Sao Paulo also progressed to the quarter-finals despite a 3-1 loss at Toluca. The Brazilian club won 5-3 on aggregate after a 4-0 home victory last week.

In Wednesday’s second leg in Mexico, Fernando Uribe netted a brace while Enrique Triverio was also on the scoresheet for the hosts.
