Johannesburg, Sept. 27 (ANI): Wayne Rooney ended his Premier League drought as Manchester United claimed a convincing 3-0 win over bottom club Sunderland to go top of the standings for the first time in more than two years.
Memphis Depay had opened the scoring after the visitors held out almost until half-time. Rooney doubled the lead less than a minute into the second half before Juan Mata added the final goal in the final minute, Sport24 reported.
Meanwhile, Manchester City suffered a 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, which helped United ascend to the top of the table for the first time since Louis van Gaal took over as manager last year. (ANI)
