Roshmitha Harimurthy of Bangalore will be representing India at the Miss Universe pageant this year after she was crowned as Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva 2016.
She was announced as the winner at a glitzy event which was held at the Dome, NSCI SVP Stadium.
The other winners for the night were Srinidhi Shetty (Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva Supranational 2016) and Aradhana Buragohain (Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva second runner up 2016).
India hasn’t won a Miss Universe crown since 2000, when Lara Dutta bagged the title
The Indian winner was announced by the judges panel that included former beauty queen and actress Lara Dutta, model turned actor Arjun Rampal, actor Abhay Deol, actress Aditi Rao Hydari and designer Gaurav Gupta.
Later in the day Indian origin Miss Rhode Island Shruti Nagarajan and openly gay Miss Missouri got ousted at the preliminary rounds of the just-concluded Miss America pageant held at the Atlantic City.
So, Roshmitha will be competing against Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields who just claimed the title of Miss America.
There is a half-Indian beauty queen in the fray. She is Miss Japan Priyanka Yoshikawa whose father Arun Ghosh from Dhaka, Bangladesh settled down in Japan in 1985. However most of her paternal uncles migrated to West Bengal, India.
At the opening of the Miss America pageant this evening the contestants were dancing before a statue of the Buddha and there will be some vehement objections from deeply Buddhit countries like Sri Lanka. – CINEWS
