Saina bows out of India Open despite valiant comeback

New Delhi, Apr 02 (ANI): Defending champion and world number six Saina Nehwal produced a spirited comeback before losing a pulsating women’s singles semifinal contest against China’s Li Xuerui in the India Open Super Series badminton tournament here on Saturday.

Nehwal was beaten 22-20, 17-21, 21-19 by the reigning Olympic champion in a gruelling contest that lasted one hour and 12 minutes at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

The 27-year-old Hyderabadi displayed tremendous amount of resilience as she fought back to clinch the second game and was leading 13-7 in the third game before she ran out of steam to hand the Chinese opponent the victory.

With her defeat, India’s challenge folded at the event. (ANI)
