To perform for PM Modi at Ricoh Coliseum
Lata Pada, Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer of Sampradaya Dance Creations proudly announced the twenty-fifth anniversary season and outlined the its numerous activities to commemorate this milestone. At the special launch event at its Sampradaya Theatre in Mississauga on Wednesday, she talked about her vision to put Bharatanatyam on Canada’s cultural map and thanked all those who continue to help to fulfil her dream.
Guest speakers included Anu Vittal, Executive Director of the Mississauga Arts Council and Dinesh Sachdev, Founder/Executive Director of FILMI Toronto. Actor Kabir Bedi, who starred in Sampradaya’s production of ‘Taj’ sent a video greeting.
Sampradaya Dance Creations has a packed year, starting with a performance to honour Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 15 at Ricoh Coliseum and the third Children’s Film Festival in partnership with FILMI on May 3.
Other headlining events include ‘nirantara – Beyond Space and Time’ at Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre, May 21 to 23. Sampradaya is also planning to take this production to India at the end of the year.
Beyond Borders, a three-day national dance symposium follows in July in Mississauga.
Sampradaya also announced that the academy is in the process of creating an agreement with York University’s Dance Program for the 2016-2017 academic year. This will see graduates from Sampradaya’s Bharatanatyam program access credits towards their undergraduate degree in the dance program at York. According to the company this is an unprecedented development for South Asian dance in Canada.
