SGPC chief appeals for peace in strife-torn Punjab

Ludhiana, Oct. 20 (ANI): Appealing to agitating Sikhs to maintain peace and harmony, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar on Tuesday said once peace was restored, the Punjab Government would hunt down all perpetrators and punish them.

He asked the Sikh community to stick to their basic principles – peace and harmony and wellbeing of the mankind.

“The state government has constituted two investigating agencies – one under a high court judge and another the SIT, but they won’t be able to track down the culprit unless we help them together, otherwise the guilty will escape,” he told ANI, adding that he appealed to the people of Punjab, especially to the Sikh community, to maintain peace and harmony.

Stating that trade and commerce and transportation have been stalled and there are protests on the streets everywhere, the SGPC chief said, “I don’t say you don’t protest. You protest so that the people come to know what has happened to Guru Granth Sahib, but don’t disrupt the situation.”

Punjab witnesses widespread protests following the alleged sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. Meanwhile, the Punjab Police have arrested two people in this connection. (ANI)
