Sonam Kapoor recently spoke about the prevailing bias towards men in the industry and the ‘obscene’ amount of money the Bollywood male colleagues earn.
“There is a lot of sexism in the society which is disgusting”, she has said.
She has cited the example of fellow actors, John Abraham and Varun Dhawan and the kind of money they got to make Dishoom, which she said is “way more than what Kareena and I were getting to make Veere Di Wedding.
“We are making Veere and we are getting an okay budget, but we are not getting what we want. I have to cut my fee, and Bebo has to cut her fee to get this film there. The film is not elaborate as we imagined. It is sad and heartbreaking. We need to work extra hard to make it look a certain way.”
Sonam added, “I am not here to make money though it would be nice. But I would like my projects to get the money. I am not asking for it.”
According to a list we compiled Varun earned Rs10 crore for Dilwale while John Abraham bagged Rs 16 crore for Dishoom.
Kareena charges Rs20 crore per film while Sonam charges Rs 14 crore.
We don’t see much gap in pay cheques per film between male and female stars of Sonam’s level.
Salman, Amitabh, Akshay, Shah Rukh, Aamir of course are a different story altogether.
