Sonowal chosen as BJP’s CM candidate in Assam

New Delhi, Jan.28 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday declared Union youth affairs and sports minister Sarbanand Sonowal as its chief minister candidate for the upcoming Assam assembly elections.

The decision in this regard was made at the BJP’s Parliamentary board meeting in the national capital, which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda said that the upcoming elections of different states were discussed.

“The Parliamentary Board has decided that the Assam assembly elections will be contested in the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal. The discussion was held on five states, but the decision was taken for Assam,” Nadda said.

Meanwhile, Sonowal thanked the BJP’s top leadership and said that he was grateful to Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah.

“I believe the people of Assam will elect us to power in the upcoming Assam assembly elections,” said Sonowal.

The elections to the 126- seat Assam Assembly are going to take place in May this year, with the tenure of Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government coming to an end on June 5. (ANI)
