London, Jan.24 (ANI): Kevin Pietersen’s 74 went in vain as Sydney Thunder beat Melbourne Stars by three wickets to clinch their first Big Bash League title at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.

The 35-year-old, who was at his imperious best, smashed four boundaries and five sixes as Stars posted 176 for the loss of nine wickets within their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Usman Khawaja of Thunder made 70 off 40 balls to help his side chase down the target with three balls to spare, the Guardian reported.

Khawaja and opener Jacques Kallis (28 off 27 balls) provided an initial thrust for Thunders as they shared 86-run opening partnership.

For Stars, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa bagged three and two wickets respectively while David Hussey also chipped in with a wicket.
