Toronto, April 29 (CINEWS): The Second City will host Diversity Weekend at The Second City Training Centre in downtown Toronto from Saturday, April 30 to Monday, May 2. The Second City is the world’s premier improv and sketch comedy theatre company is making a concerted attempt to reach out to the South Asian demographic, the most visible minority in Toronto.
Speaking to Can-India from Chicago, Director of Diversity and Inclusion Dionna Griffin-Irons said they would be holding free Improv workshops for ethnic minorities. Last year (2015) we awarded 14 fellowships to Toronto-based Canadians to learn Improv. We want people to learn the art form,” she said.
Improv theatre for those who may be unfamiliar with the genre is live theatre where the characters and dialogue of the story is made up on the spot. The improvisers will look to audience suggestions or any inspiration to get going.
Sketch comedy on the other hand comprises a series of short comedy scenes or vignettes, called performed by a group of actors or comedians. A sketch is what comes out of an Improv session and is then written down.
Throughout the weekend The Second City will offer free workshops, performances, auditions and professional development opportunities for comedic talent who identify with any ethnic community.
