Three Madhesi protesters killed in Nepal Police firing

Morang (Nepal), Jan. 21 (ANI): Three Madhesi protesters were killed and more than a dozen injured after the Nepal Police allegedly opened fire at them during a protest over new Constitution at Rangeli Bazaar in Morang district on Thursday.

According to reports, police fired at least 50 rounds and lobbed dozens of tear gas shells in the air to contain the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) protesters.

Of the three victims, Mahadev Rishidev was the last one to succumb to his bullet injuries at a Rangeli hospital. Another victim Draupadi Devi Chaudhary, 58, died on the spot, while Shibu Majhi died after he was hit by a bullet in Dainiya near Rangeli.

A permanent resident of Chopada in Rangeli, Chaudhary was on his way to meet a relative at Rangeli Bazaar when he was hit by bullets.

The clash ensued after the UDMF cadres attempted to break a security cordon at a function of the youth wing of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) Youth.

Police opened fire when a group of protesters rushed towards the stage, in which more than a dozen, including police and UDMF cadres were injured. (ANI)
