Torontonians urged to host community conversations as part of ‘TransformTO’

transforYOThe City of Toronto is inviting residents and community groups to host their own community conversations to generate ideas to reduce Toronto’s greenhouse gas emissions and create the low-carbon city of their dreams, as part of TransformTO: Climate Action for a Healthy, Equitable, Prosperous Toronto.

A City initiative in partnership with the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, TransformTO will create a detailed action plan to reduce Toronto’s the greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2020, based on 1990 levels, and a longer-term approach to achieve the City’s 80 per cent reduction target by 2050. City Council unanimously adopted those targets in 2007. To date, city-wide emissions have been reduced by 25 per cent.

“As we look to drastically reduce our emissions and create a sustainable, low-carbon city, we are offering an opportunity for residents to engage with their friends, family and neighbours in meaningful conversations about one of the most challenging issues of our time,” said Councillor Michelle Holland (Ward 35 Scarborough Southwest), Chair of the City’s Parks and Environment Committee. “I encourage all interested community groups and residents to host a conversation on this important topic.”

The City will provide a variety of materials to support the community conversations, including the TransformTO Conversation Kit and background materials used at four City-hosted events earlier this spring.

Input from the community will be added to and build on the input already submitted through the four City-hosted events, the TransformTO Workbook, and the TalkTransformation! speaker series. A summary of the results will become part of a technical model designed to evaluate the impact of various scenarios and alternatives. Together, the engagement results and TransformTO’s technical scenario modelling will inform the development of an updated Climate Change Action Plan that will be presented to City Council at the end of 2016.

Interested residents are asked to begin the process of hosting a community conversation by emailing the TransformTO team at, and to submit a summary of their conversations to the City by June 20. – CINEWS
