TTC installs barriers outside Queens Quay streetcar tunnel

Since 2014 there have been about 25 vehicles that have entered the Queens Quay streetcar tunnel by accident.

With the installation of these new barriers outside the tunnel, the authorities hope to make such accidents a thing of the past.

Even a distracted driver will find it hard to miss the six bright yellow bollards that have been placed along the streetcar tracks near the intersection of Queens Quay West and York Street.

After the two most recent incidents in March, the TTC said a gate mechanism would be installed in addition to the signs, rumble strips, flashing lights and raised track already in place to warn drivers not to enter the tunnel.

The installation of bollards is meant to make it obvious that “streetcar tracks are a no-go zone” for cars and just in case that isn’t enough, a mechanical gate closer to the tunnel will also be installed in the coming weeks. – CINEWS
