Writs were issued today under Section 9.1 of the Election Act for byelections in the electoral districts of Ottawa-Vanier and Niagara West-Glanbrook.

The byelections will fill vacancies created in the provincial parliament. Under the Election Act, elections must be called on a Wednesday and held the fifth Thursday after the date of the issue of the writ. Voting day will be November 17, 2016.

Premier Kathleen Wynne called the Ottawa-Vanier byelection to replace former attorney general Madeleine Meilleur, who quit the long-held Liberal seat last summer. The Niagara-West Glanbrook seat was vacated by former Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak, who resigned last month.

The winners in both of those ridings will have to run again , as the Liberal government has announced it’s looking to set the next provincial election for June 7, 2018.- CINEWS
