Wuhan, Oct. 2 (ANI): Former world number one Venus Williams produced a resilient performance on Friday as she battled past Italy’s Roberta Vinci in a pulsating three set thriller to reach the Wuhan Open final.
The seven-time Grand Slam winner recovered from a set down to claim a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(4) win over Vinci in the topsy turvy semifinal contest that lasted almost three hours.
The win saw Venus avenge her younger sister Serena’s US Open semi-final loss against Vinci, who ended the current world number one’s hopes of completing calendar year grand slam at Flushing Meadows.
Venus, who won her 700th match on tour earlier this week, will next face the winner of the second semi-final later on Friday between fifth seed Garbine Muguruza and Germany’s Angelique Kerber. (ANI)
