London, June 29 (ANI): World number one Novak Djokovic has entered the second round of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships after beating Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in the opening match at the Centre court.
The defending champion, who began his title defence with a 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory, will face Lleyton Hewitt or Jarkko Nieminen in round two.
The Serbian top seed, who was playing his first competitive match since losing to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final, made 20 unforced errors but broke serve to win each of the three sets.
Djokovic said that Kohlschreiber can be very tricky on all the surfaces, especially grass, and had nothing to lose but he managed to stay composed, the BBC reported.
He added that he made crucial breaks at 5-4 in all three sets and that helped him clinch the victory.
Djokovic, who is eyeing his third Wimbledon title, said, “It’s great to be back, this is the cradle of our sport. It doesn’t get any bigger than Wimbledon so it’s an honour to open this year’s play on Centre Court as defending champion.” (ANI)
