Winnipeg student is runner-up in ‘What’s your Story?’ video contest

videocontestThe winners of the 2016 ‘What’s Your Story?’ video contest has been announced by Trend Micro Incorporated (TSE) in Ottawa and Dallas.

The international contest, which aims to engage and empower youth through video and promote positive social media use, asked participants to submit videos that answer the question, “What Does the Internet Mean to You?” The winners – one individual and one school – will each be awarded a grand prize of $10,000 US.  Runner-up winners – two individuals and two schools – will take home a$1,000 US prize each.

Moises Lucero, 18, of Winnipeg, Manitoba was a runner up winner for his film “Internet Introspect.” “I wanted to give my personal spin on the Internet and stress the importance of potential,” said Moises. “Sometimes people don’t use the Internet wisely, but if they do, and are passionate about the content they create, it can help them be their best selves.” His video is here: “Internet Introspect”.

Following the inaugural 2010 contest, teens, adults and schools have participated in ‘What’s Your Story?’ For Canada and the United States in 2016 there were nearly 120 entries — nearly double the number as compared to 2015. “The number of quality videos received this year was outstanding,” said Lynette Owens, director and founder of Trend Micro Internet Safety for Kids & Families program.

“Our call to action was far bolder than ever before. We really wanted to know what the Internet means to people and how it impacts their life.  We were impressed with their answers and learned that people, especially teens, believe the Internet can be both positive and negative, have discovered ways to manage this, and cannot imagine life without it.”
