Yahoo to face action over sending ‘unsolicited’ text messages

Chicago, Jan.5 (ANI): A Chicago court has ordered Internet giant Yahoo Inc to face a class action lawsuit, accusing the company of sending unsolicited text messages to Sprint Corp cellphone users.

The company has been accused of sending spam text messages to more than 500,000 users, welcoming them to Yahoo Messenger, without their permission.

According to the Reuters, the welcome messages constituted unauthorised advertising for Yahoo services, which violates the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

The messages were sent to the users in March, 2013 and plaintiffs are seeking damages of up to USD 1,500 per message. (ANI)
