Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan to star in Hindi remake of Suriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’

It seems like the current trend in Hindi cinema is to remake movies made in the South. In fact, this trend has been prevalent for quite a few years now. Akshay Kumar’s latest release ‘Bachchan Pandey’ is also said to be a remake of a Tamil movie, ‘Jigarthanda’. It joins a long list of movies like, ‘Ghajini’, ‘Wanted’, ‘Singham’ and ‘Kabir Singh’, all of which have been remakes of Tamil and Telugu movies.

Now as per latest reports, Akshay Kumar’s next project is also going to be the remake of a South Indian movie, actor Suriya’s Tamil film ‘Soorarai Pottru’.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ was reportedly loosely based on the life of Captain Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, an airline that was famous as it made travelling by airplane affordable for the middle class in India.

In the Tamil movie, the lead roles were played by Suriya and Aparna Balamurali and was directed by Sudha Kongara.

‘Soorarai Pottru’s’ Hindi adaptation is said to star Akshay Kumar and ‘Angrezi Medium’ actress, Radhika Madan and evidently the director for the Hindi movie will also be Sudha Kongara only.

As per reports in Mid-Day, the movie is in the pre-production stage and the director has decided to set the Hindi movie in western India. So, it is possible that Radhika may play the role of a woman hailing from Rural Maharashtra. She may even have to learn a specific dialect before the movie starts its shoot schedule.

‘Soorarai Pottru’ won a lot of praise in India and internationally as well. The Suriya starrer was selected as one of ten films that would be screened in the Best Foreign Film Category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards.

For his role in the movie, (Nedumaaran Rajangam also called Maara), Suriya received many awards including Best Actor in South India International Movie Awards as well as in the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

Akshay Kumar, who is a veteran in his own right, has big shoes to fill when it comes to this role. The Hindi remake will be produced by Abundantia Entertainment and even though Akshay and Radhika have not officially signed up for the movie, sources say the makers are keen to start workshops for the movie this month and begin the shoot in the summer of 2022.
