Is Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees being dragged into a controversy? But this time it won’t be a concern of the MNS!

Shah Rukh has denied the reports claiming that his upcoming film Raees is based on underworld figure Abdul Latif, saying the movie is pure work of fiction.

Abdul Latif was an underworld figure in Gujarat and an alleged associate of Dawood Ibrahim. He was based in Ahmedabad and was also politically well connected. He used to wait on tables in gambling dens where he started serving liquor as a teenager.

He became a small-time bootlegger and eventually monopolised the illegal liquor business in Gujarat. Latif was wanted for over 40 cases of murder and a similar number of kidnappings and was a suspect in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

He was arrested in 1995 in Delhi and was housed at the Sabarmati jail pending trial. In November 1997, Abdul Latif was shot dead by the police in Ahmedabad while allegedly trying to escape.

In 2014, Latif’s son, Shaikh Arif Abdul Latif, contested in the election against Shanker Singh Vaghela, who was the Chief Minister when Latif was killed. Latif’s other son had contested against Vaghela in 2009.

The 51-year-old Shah Rukh along with the makers including Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar and director Rahul Dholakia have denied that the film has any resemblance to the life of Latif, who built his empire around illicit liquor.

The makers clarify: “In view of certain media reports that claim that the film ‘Raees’ is based on a real-life story and rumours to that effect being circulated, we take this opportunity to clarify that the story of the film ‘Raees’ is a pure work of fiction,

“All those making such claims, will realise it themselves, once they see the film. It is an imagined crime thriller set against the backdrop of Gujarat,” the makers said in a statement.

The trailer of the movie which is scheduled to release on January 25 has created a huge fan response.

“We are overwhelmed with the positive and encouraging response showered on the trailer of ‘Raees’ and we certainly hope that the pouring of love shall continue upon the release of the film as well,” Farhan said.

Shah Rukh is co-producing the film under his Red Chillies banner.

Raees also stars Pakistani actress Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. – CINEWS
