Arshad Warsi corrects a reporter who called ‘Bachchhan Pandey’ a hit: “Don’t lie, it’s not!”

Arshad Warsi is known for his sense of humour and witty comebacks. The actor was recently seen in the Akshay Kumar starrer, ‘Bachchhan Pandey’ which released in cinemas on March 18, 2022.

Despite heavy promotions and an interesting story line the movie received a lukewarm response at the box office. This was largely due to the fact that Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ had released only a week earlier and was a raging phenomenon in cinemas by the next week.

People all over the country were clamoring to watch ‘The Kashmir Files’ and this impacted the ticket sales of ‘Bachchhan Pandey’. It didn’t help that just a week later, SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus ‘RRR’ released in cinemas.

Sandwiched between two blockbusters, ‘Bachchhan Pandey’ lost the attention of its audiences. As per reports, though the movie was not a box office hit, it apparently still managed to make enough to recover the money invested.

Recently Arshad Warsi was in Bengaluru to attend a launch event where a journalist referred to ‘Bachchhan Pandey’ as a hit. He was quick to correct the journalist and laughingly said, “Don’t lie, it is not a success.”

When the audience also chuckled at his self-deprecating wit, he continued. “It was a good film, but unfortunately it happened, some things work, some things don’t. I feel it just went through a bad patch, there were various things that made it not as successful as it should have been. It is a big film, it should’ve made a lot more money, but it is still not a loss, it covered its money.”

While some journalist asked him if this was due to the OTT effect, Arshad said that it wasn’t the OTT effect. He said, “Okay, I’ve got an answer for that, but I’m not going to say it. Let’s not get into it, it is a different space.”

It’s clear that Arshad was referring to the overlap between ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Bachchhan Pandey’. While Arshad maintained his silence, Akshay Kumar while speaking to HT admitted that the reactions and interest around ‘The Kashmir Files’ was a factor that affected the box office numbers of ‘Bachchhan Pandey’.

Akshay said, “Firstly, let me tell you I am elated with the success that The Kashmir Files has seen. It tells you the power of cinema and that there is no formula of starting budgets and films in a certain way that guarantee success. It proves that the audiences are who we make our films for and when they lap up something it just flies. Yes, I would have liked Bachchhan Paandey to better than what it is doing but not once do I blame The Kashmir files for it. That film is a storm and we came in the eye of it.”

Arshad Warsi may not have found success with ‘Bachchhan Pandey’ but his next project, the web series ‘Asur’ season 2 is bound to bring him the accolades. The first season of the show was highly acclaimed and all eyes are on Season 2, which is scheduled to premiere sometime in June or July of 2022.
