Benedict Cumberbatch’s mom said he wasn’t good looking enough for ‘Sherlock’

Hollywood actor Benedict Cumberbatch rang in his 46th birthday on Tuesday, July 19. Looking back on the ‘Doctor Strange’s’ acting trajectory, the role that put him on the map as a talented performer was the TV series ‘Sherlock’. He played a modern Sherlock Holmes in the 2010 TV series.

He gained a lot of popularity for his portrayal of the ace detective, but it’s surprising to learn that Benedict’s own mother, Wanda Ventham was shocked when she heard that he earned the role of Sherlock.

She didn’t seem to think her son was good looking enough to play the world-famous detective.

Since his TV stint, Benedict Cumberbatch has moved on to work on various movie projects and won many accolades and awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award, British Academy Television Award, Lawrence Olivier Award. He has also earned nominations for: two Oscars, two British Academy Film Awards as well as four Golden Globe Awards.

In a throwback interview a few years ago, co-creator of ‘Sherlock’, Steven Moffat shared that Benedict’s mother was not sure that her son was the right fit for the role.

In an interview with Times Out, Steven said, “Benedict’s mum didn’t think he was good-looking enough to play Sherlock. Nobody did. He never thought of himself as good-looking and everyone casually agreed with him. He still regards it as preposterous that he’s become this sex symbol.”

Besides, playing the role of Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch has also essayed the role of Dr. Stephen Strange aka Doctor Strange in many movies of the MCU, including two standalone Doctor Strange movies – ‘Doctor Strange’, which released in 2016 and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, which released in 2022.

Benedict’s illustrious career includes several award winning movies like, ’12 Years a Slave’, ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘1917’, ‘The Imitation Game’, ‘The Power of the Dog’, ‘The Courier’ and several others.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be seen in ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar’. In the movie, he plays the lead and is accompanied by an all star cast which includes, Dev Patel, Ralph Fiennes, Rupert Friend, Ben Kingsley and Richard Ayoade.

The movie commenced production earlier this year and it is scheduled for a digital release on Netflix.
