Bill Cosby found guilty of sexual abuse of a minor in 1975

On Tuesday, June 21, in a civil case, a California jury ruled that Bill Cosby sexually assaulted a woman in 1975 at the Playboy Mansion. The woman was a teenager at the time, so it was sexual assault of a minor and so the court ordered Cosby to pay the woman $500,000 in damages for the emotional distress she endured following the incident.

This is the first of many civil lawsuits against Bill Cosby to come to trial. During the trial the woman testified that Bill Cosby had invited her and her friend to the mansion when she was 16. At the time Cosby was 37 years old. He allegedly sexually abused her there.

This verdict comes almost a year after Cosby was let out from prison after the highest court in Pennsylvania dismissed a sexual assault conviction against him in a criminal suit.

This woman brought up the civil case under a Californian law which allows people who claim to have been abused as kids to file civil cases many years later as well, when they are adults.

Bill Cosby was TV’s most beloved comedian and was best known for playing a loving husband and father in the 1980s for the series, ‘The Cosby Show’. Such was his popularity with kids that he was actually nicknamed, ‘America’s Dad’.

This family-friendly, great with kids’ reputation came crashing down after nearly 50 women accused him of sexual assaults dating back to over five decades.

The woman who won the case in California is now 64 years old and she said she was “elated” by the ruling. She filed this case way back in 2014 after multiple reports and accusations against Cosby came to light.

The woman said that those reports stirred up unpleasant memories of her encounter with Cosby and it also triggered more than four years of anxiety and other distress for her.

While the woman said that she was sexually assaulted, Bill Cosby has denied the allegation. His defence team spokesperson Andrew Wyatt said, “Mr. Cosby continues to maintain his innocence and will vigorously fight these false accusations, so that he can get back to bringing the pursuit of happiness, joy and laughter to the world.”
