Bob Mackie: Kim wearing Marilyn dress was a “big mistake”

Kim Kardashian made headlines with her Met Gala 2022 outfit. She walked the red carpet in Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress that the actress wore in 1962 to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to former president of the United States John F. Kennedy.

The timeless classic dress had more than 6000 hand-sewn crystals that adorned the nude mesh fabric of the dress, which had a classic scooped neckline.

Kim Kardashian further made news when it was known that she went on an extreme diet to lose 7 kgs in 3 weeks in order to fit into the dress. While her look was definitely the most talked about this year, it left the internet divided. Some praised her timeless style and carrying the outfit off with panache, while others criticised her risking a timeless piece of history.

Now, Bob Mackie, the designer who sketched the iconic gown for Marilyn Monroe, all those years ago has spoken about this and he stated that “it was a big mistake” that Kim wore the outfit to Met Gala 2022.

Bob Mackie recently gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly. He said, “I thought it was a big mistake. Marilyn was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just fabulous. Nobody photographs like that. And it was done for her. It was designed for her. Nobody else should be seen in that dress.”

He also stated that he was concerned about the damage that would have been caused to the dress and how wearing it again may have damaged its preservation and compromised its structural integrity.

Bob Mackie is a famous American fashion designer who sketched out this iconic dress for Marilyn Monroe in the early 60s when he was just 23 years old. Currently, the designer is 82 years old and is popular for styling icons like Lucille Ball, Ann-Margaret, Diahann Carroll, Carol Burnett, Carol Channing, among others.
