‘Bridgerton’ is among the most popular shows of Netflix. The first season was a phenomenal success and the second season topped all charts of viewership. Within a few days of streaming of Bridgerton 2, judging by its massive popularity, Shondaland announced that there will be a third season of the beloved Regency era romance drama.
Each season spotlights the romance of a new couple. Season 1 was all about Simon and Daphne; Season 2 was about Anthony and Kate and now it has been confirmed that the third season will spotlight the romance between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Feathington.
Nicola Coughan who will essay the role of Penelope Feathington announced at the ‘Bridgerton For Your Consideration’ panel in Hollywood that the third season of ‘Bridgerton’ will focus on the romance between her character Penelope and her (Penelope’s) longest object of affection, her crush Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton.
This is a change up from the Bridgerton novels. Julia Quinn’s novels have inspired this series, and in the novel, Penelope and Colin’s story is part of Book Four – ‘Romancing Mr. Bridgerton’.
Speaking about Season 3 and the fact that her character takes centerstage, Coughan says, “I feel like if you see Penelope fawning over this boy for another season, you’ll be like, ‘Get it together! Come on, move on and get over it. Jess (Showrunner) has talked to Luke and I through the season, and I think people are going to be really obsessed. I think book fans are going to be happy.”
Coughan’s “crush” Colin (Luke Newton) also shared his excitement about the upcoming season. In a Zoom call days ahead of the announcement, Newton said, There’s so much love for that relationship. Which brings its pressures because there are people that are really excited about this story to come to the forefront. But also, it really warms me.”
In the season 2 finale, Newton’s character Colin tells a bunch of people that he wouldn’t “dream of courting Penelope”, a statement that leaves Penelope heartbroken. Speaking about his character and the upcoming season, Newton said, “I’m hoping that he has sort of a more sensitive side to him. I love that we are exploring a relationship that so many people have had, where you form a friendship and you get to know each other down to the core. Then it sparks something from there.”
Season 2 leads, Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma) and Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) will be back for Season 3 as well along with the rest of the Bridgerton cast.
